Film Classifications

Films for commercial release in New Zealand are required to be classified under the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. Please contact the Film and Video Labelling Body for advice.

It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make any persons viewing a film aware of the classification of the film, and to carry out the necessary restrictions to access that may apply to such classifications.

  • GREEN means anyone can view the film.

  • YELLOW PG means anyone can view the film however guidance from a parent or guardian is recommended for younger viewers.

  • YELLOW M means that anyone can view the film but some films may be more suitable for mature audiences 16 years and over.

  • RED means the film is legally restricted and can only be viewed by an audience that have obtained the specified age on the label. There are no exceptions to this restriction. It is an offence under Section 125 of the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993 to allow anyone under the specified age to view the film.
